"Come back in time to the age of sail for lighthearted musical romps and gripping stories about women who tempted sailors, who lamented sailors, or who were sailors." Fascinating stories of women and the sea have been passed down in ballad form through the centuries. Some women love sailors; some women are sailors.
An internationally touring ballad singer who hails from Maryland, Judy Cook will explore the Songs of Women and the Sea during her performance during Sea Music at Sunset. Many of the songs have choruses, and listeners are encouraged to sing along. Hope, love, determination, humor, and courage are all things that we find in ourselves as well as in these songs of women and the sea.
Did you know?
- Before the 18th century women on board a ship were thought to bring bad luck and could be blamed for foul weather or lack of wind.
- Reports of mermaid sighting by explorers and sailors including Christopher Columbus were surprisingly common.
- Many women in the 1600’s & 1700’s disguised themselves as boys and went to sea to find adventure, to support themselves financially, or to be near a sweetheart or husband.
