DCMM is pleased to share an exciting new exhibit with our maritime community: Sentinels of The Door. The exhibit, in the Baumgartner Gallery in Sturgeon Bay, celebrates the rich history of the US Coast Guard (and predecessor services) on the Door Peninsula, from Alexander Hamilton’s 1790 letter petitioning to establish the Revenue Cutter Service, to today’s US Coast Guard City status for Sturgeon Bay.
The exhibit highlights Gene Gislason, the Washington Island, Door County native who was awarded the Silver Star “For outstanding heroism as Commanding Officer of the USS LCI (L) 94, while landing assault troops in Normandy” on June 6, 1944.

The gallery also features the gold lifesaving medal awarded to Martin Knudsen, lighthouse keeper on Pilot Island, for rescuing the crews of two vessels in the Death’s Door passage in October 1982.

Our Sturgeon Bay museum is now open 9am-5pm daily. We offer admission discounts for seniors, kids, retired military, and free admission for active duty military and their families. Of course, DCMM Members receive free admission to all three museum locations!
